All you wanted to know about Beagle Terrier Mix Breeds…

What is a beagle-terrier mix? Terriers have been described as “fiery and feisty”, and Beagles as “extremely curious and very energetic”. So how about adopting a dog that is at once playful and feisty? How about choosing a breed that is comfortable around people but wary of strangers?  If that is what you want, then a Beagle Terrier mix or the English Beagle is the right breed for you!

Here are some facts about the breed:

What is a beagle-terrier mix all about?

When the two ancient pure-breeds Beagle and Terrier were interbred, the final breed inherited traits from both.

  • They usually go up to sizes of about 12 to 15 inches;
  • They weigh about 20 to 25 pounds.
  • Some are athletic and muscular, while others are smooth and wire haired.
  • They have characteristic beagle eyes – Hazel and apparently pleading.

What are their usual traits?

  • Beagle Terrier Mix dogs make excellent watchdogs.
  • They are playful and happy-go-lucky by nature, easily distracted by a sudden sound or unfamiliar smell and likely to go chasing after it. And therefore, they get easily lost or stolen.
  • They can be trained easily and make very good pets.
  • From terriers they inherit intelligence, energy and smartness: they can be extremely manipulative and have great hunting instinct.
  • From beagles they inherit sociability and friendliness: they are very kid-friendly and get along with other dogs.

Beagle Terrier Varieties

Since there are many breeds of terriers, which have widely varying traits, when interbred, beagle-terriers also differ greatly! Quite a few varieties of beagle terrier mix exist.

Some of the most common are:

  • Pug Beagle Terrier Mix

The cute wrinkled snout of a Pug, the sensitivity to sounds and smells as of the beagle, and the activeness of the Terrier! They’re often nicknamed puggles, and make good family pets. They tend to be a favorite with the kids.

  • Beagle Boston terrier Mix
This one is a cross between a beagle and a Boston terrier. They inherit the alertness and obedience of beagles. They are often called Boglen terriers.

  • Beagle Mix Rat Terrier

Beagle mix rat terriers are very versatile and adaptable. Like the beagles they have a great sense of pro-activeness, and from the terriers they get their adaptability. They make for very good rescue dogs.

Do you need to worry about food?

Not really as they are not fussy eaters. The Beagle Terrier mixes must be fed an adequate and nutritious diet.
Try to include both proteins (meat or fish) and carbohydrates, twice a day.

How do they normally behave?

As has been specified earlier, Beagle terrier mixes are unique in that they inherit traits from both parent breeds- the beagle and the terrier.

From the beagle strain, they normally inherit:

  • Playfulness.
  • Adaptability.
  • Sense of Smell.

Whereas, terriers tend to be hunting dogs, who can also be loyal, stable and friendly.

However, we suggest that you choose a puppy, and then spend some time with it so that you get to know each other. This is a fun and easy way to find out about the little guy before you actually adopt him…

Properly trained, a puppy will grow up to be a healthy and happy dog, and will be your best friend for years to come!
